Description
Robert Owen (1771-1858) Welsh social reformer, one of the founders of Socialism and cooperative movement;
ran the New Lanark mill under socialist principles; attempted to set up 'New Harmony Society' in Indiana, USA.
In 1832 proposed that unions should unite and in 1834 the Grand National Consolidated Trade Union was formed. Government reacted by arresting six agricultural workers from Tolpuddle in Dorset for forming a union, and sentencing them to seven years transportation. Owen lead a march from Copenhagen Fields, Islington on 21st April 1834 carrying a petition which was refused and in August the union collapsed.
