Description
Formerly thought to be a portrait of Queen Mary I (1516-58); recent identifications include Margaret Douglas (1515-78) niece of Henry VIII but the most likely sitter is Lady Margaret Arundell (c.1515-71) sister of Queen Katherine Howard and wife of Sir Thomas Arundell (c.1502-52) Chancellor of Queen Katherine Parr, who was executed in 1552; portrait was at Sawston Hall, Cambridgeshire until 1980 and before 1918 at Sutton Place, Surrey; it is probable that the portrait came to Sutton Place through Lady Margaret Arundell's daughter, Dorothy, who married Henry Weston in 1559; almost certainly the portrait noted at Sutton in 1733 by the visiting antiquary, George Vertue;
