Description
Written by Voltaire (1694-1778) in 1753 and adapting the Chinese play: The Orphan of Zhao, Voltaire saw it as a story exemplifying morality: that genius and reason have a natural superiority over blind force and barbarism. The reading was in 1755. Diderot, Turgot, d'Alembert and Condillac depicted grouped around a bust of Voltaire; Reading of the Tragedy 'L'Orphelin de la Chine' in the Salon of Madame Geoffrin, or An Evening at Madame Geoffrin's, 1812.
