Description
The Rev. Francis Hutcheson (1694–1746) was a Scottish-Irish philosopher.
Wearing a black academic gown over a brown coat, the sitter was Professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of Glasgow from 1729 to 1746 and appropriately holds a copy of Cicero's 'De Finibus'. He was an inspirational teacher, lecturing in English rather than the traditional latin. His students included Adam Smith and the founder of the Hunterian, Dr William Hunter.
